I would like to thank the volunteers and residents that have been working this winter to provide a break from our monotony with outdoor family events.  A few weekends ago organizers held the annual Londo Lake Ice Fishing Tournament.  This event began many years ago as a part of the Hale Winterfest and grew into an event of its own.  The organizers have prizes and giveaways from donations made by local businesses and sponsors.  The kids especially enjoy the time as they have always had trophies and prizes just for kids.  This year a new event kicked-off last weekend at Long Lake.  Again a group of local residents wanting to break-up the “long winters night” hosted an even on the Long Lake Village cove at the west end of the lake.  They had a hockey area, ice skating, sled races and the perennial favorites winter time event, the polar bear swim.  There were many brave souls that got into the swim of things and took the plunge.  I know our firefighters enjoyed the time as they were able to work with their ice rescue gear and relax with the local residents.  The music, warming fires and warmer beverages made the event one to be repeated.  Congratulations to both groups and thanks from the community for giving us that much needed wintertime break. I forgot to mention that in addition to these outside gigs, we also had two new inside gigs.  The Lions brought a show called Dueling Pianos into the big hall and it was hilarious and entertaining, everyone had a great time and enjoyed the evening.  A few weeks later the Hale Education Foundation held a Trivia Night that saw competing tables vying for minutiae dominance.  The competition was tight but the winning table, educator heavy, showed their trivia knowledge.  Congratulations to the Hale Education Foundation for such a great event to break our winter monotony. We hope to see all these events repeated in the upcoming years.

As the winter wanes remember that the roads are going to get nasty.  Rough and soft, muddy and slick so be careful and be patient.  The road commission will be out on all of them eventually and they will settle down once the weather stabilizes and the frost goes. 

Don’t forget that Board of Review is coming in March and your new notice of assessment is in the mail.  You can only protest the assessed value on this notice.  The taxable value is set by law.  However, if the assessed value drops below the taxable value, the taxable value will drop also.  Read the notice and it will tell you how, where and when you can protest these values, and be sure that if you do protest that you have comparable parcels to verify your numbers.  Protesting just because you think it is to high is not enough to make a change, you need to prove it is to high in comparison to similar parcels.

Please remember you cannot plow your snow from your driveway across the road.  It is illegal to do so and can result in a $500 fine for each occurrence if you’re caught.  It causes the road to have speed bumps where the overflow lays in the road causing hazardous driving conditions for other travelers and is dangerous for the plow driver as other drivers on the road are not expecting to encounter a truck, plow or snowblower across the road while traveling.  So please keep any snow on your own side of the road.

The new Michigan State Police Hale Detachment is not a manned office.  Their offices in our community provide a location for office procedures, report writing, statement recording, scheduled meetings and equipment changeout.  You may not be allowed in without an appointment.  If you need immediate assistance call 911 and they will direct you or for an appointment call the West Branch MSP desk at (989) 345-0956.

The waste site is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 AM through 4 PM and Sunday from 9 AM through 2 PM.  We are open on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day.

The Garden Club is still looking for anyone interested in assisting them in caring for our planters in the downtown but the person to call is now Kim Kocher(989-899-1066) or Bev Mason(989-305-8823) Again I want to thank these hard working volunteers for what they give to keep our community looking beautiful.

Bassi has done grading for drainage and Reilly put in the roads, raised 24 inches. Each lot will have a culvert and ditch in front for drainage. Exterior lighting, at entrance and eventually down the street and each barn will have lighting. Brandon is building all buildings. One well on property and there is a dry spot on their property -that belongs to Todd and Moe, agreement with them that the well is theirs. No businesses allowed. There is a drain in the center of each building. Only electric heat is allowed. Willie Petershiem is doing the building. Keypad access and gated. SUPERVISORS CORNER I hope all is well with you and your families after the spring floods and winter iceing, we have had a very precarious start to 2026. But we have survived and now look forward to spring and all the new growth and the healing of the trees and ground as the waters recede and the new flowers bloom. It all goes on as before with, possibly, some minor changes. We will adapt and proceed as we have to with the changes that result. Fix what got broken and replant what may have been lost. It will all come back, some just a little different than before. It is all about change, whether we want it or not, it will always happen.Speaking of change, we will again be experiencing some of this ourselves. About mid-summer, to the best of my understanding of the project schedule, MDOT will be replacing the stop light downtown. They will be removing the existing lights and installing new poles and cross-arm lights that face each lane. It will take a couple of weeks and will cause disruptions in the downtown area, so be aware and pass this on to others in the community so that they are aware also and can plan accordingly. MDOT will actually be performing this change-out at four others intersections in the county through the summer and early fall.We have met with Spectrum and the district library regarding the move and they are shooting for the middle of June to have their fiber installed and ready to go. We will wait until that work is complete before we start the packing and move operation. We are looking for volunteers to help with the book packing and unpacking. We will move the shelving since we installed it years ago, as well as the desks and hutch. If you are interested in helping please contact our office or call Cheryl at the library. We will contact any volunteers with a proposed date and time as our plans become firmer. The same is the case with the historical museum which will move later in the summer or early in the fall. Depending on the weather and prepping the new location for their move.You may have noticed that we had to remove some trees in the downtown due to sight line problems. The trees had become a viewing obstruction to trucks coming from the east at the intersection and also were a concern with the new stoplight configuration. We plan to add a bench and planter at one location and have the stumps ground at all locations.The garden club has commissioned a sculpture by a local artist for the gazebo area. We hope to have it installed by this summer. They are raising funds themselves for this as they want it to be from the community to the community. You can contact them by calling Bev Mason at 989-305-8823.I want to thank the historical commission for their wonderful program on the Edmund Fitzgerald that was held on April 16. We had over 70 people from all over the state attend the program and the speaker was entertaining as well as informative. They have told me that many people that could not attend have asked for another program from this presenter. They are looking at a possible second program in the near future. Keep checking and we will keep you informed. The historical group has a program scheduled for September 19th at 2 pm here, with Phil Naud on the CCC, their camps and work programs in Iosco County. Please mark your calendars for this date. Phil is a known scholar on the CCC and their roles and impacts in northern Michigan.Consider a membership at the Community Center and Eagle Point Plaza. You can come and enjoy pickleball at any time, yoga, cardio drumming, fitness training, walking or some more intense TOWANDA. Whatever your need we probably have some form of activity to assist you. So stop in and see Roma about a membership. We would love to see you. When you’re here stop in on Tuesdays to the Plainfield Township Historical Museum. They have great displays of our community throughout history and how our members lived long ago. The members do a great job preserving and showcasing our heritage.
